This is a night life centre in the middle of the island, but also a beautiful place to visit during day. People come here in the afternoons to enjoy the sunset from one of the many restaurants by the lake front, moving on later to bars and clubs. Lagoa da Conceição (or Lagoa as many just call it) has a young, hippie vibe to it in the town center and more of a touristic feel going down the long lakeside avenue Avenida das Rendeiras. You can stop along the avenue to relax on the grass, or go for a swim in the shallow waters.
The lake itself is big and excellent for sports such as kite surfing, wind surfing, canoeing, kayaking and small dingy sailing. There are a couple of sail clubs, as well as kite and wind surfing schools, such as Aldeia de Surf. As for wind surfing, it is good when the wind comes from the South or from the West.
Traffic jams are a huge problem in Lagoa da Conceicao during holidays, since all cars going to Praia Mole or Joaquinha have to pass here. A new parallel avenue constructed in 2023 has somewhat aleviated this issue.
Behind Avenida das Rendeiras, a large area of sand dunes spread out, all the way to Joaquina beach. It takes about one hour to cross the dunes by foot to reach the ocean. Among the dunes are small ponds, desert vegetation, and birds.
Located on a hill overlooking the Lagoa centre, is the old church Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceicao, surrounded by small streets and rich vegetation. If you want an even better view of Lagoa, you can drive up the twisty and steep hill connecting the region with central Florianópolis . On top of the hill there is a popular lookout to stop by.
North of the Lagoa centre along the coast, you have Ponto das Almas, where kite surfers prefer to enter the lake. Continuing further, you will arrive at the beginning of a hiking trail along Costa da Lagoa - the lake coast.
This lake coast has some small settlements, where mainly Azoric immigrants colonized. It is only accessible either by hiking or by the small passenger ferry boats going up and down along the coast, starting in the Lagoa centre, by the bridge. You can board or disembark these boats at any of the many piers along the lakeside, and the price is cheap. One of the most popular day tours is hiking the Costa da Lagoa trail by foot in the morning until reaching the waterfall, having a big lunch with drinks in one of the beach restaurants there, and returning with a full belly on a ferry boat - in that way enjoying the views from both land and sea.
